Focus on legal harmonisation and minority rights in Georgia
The Centre for Eastern European Law (ZOR) at the REWI Faculty recently (28 November 2024) hosted a high-profile panel discussion on the topic of ‘Legal harmonisation and minority rights in Georgia’. The event began with warm words of welcome from Dean Prof. Dr Gabriele Schmölzer and Associate Professor Dr Benedikt Harzl, Deputy Director of the ZOR.
The academic focus was on the presentations by our invited experts, Prof. Irine Kurdadze and Prof. David Pataraia from Tbilisi State University (TSU), who provided an impressive overview of the diverse legal and social challenges in this field. Expert and critical commentary on their presentations was provided by former Dean Univ.-Prof. Dr Joseph Marko and Assoc. Prof. Dr Emma Lantschner (Centre for South-Eastern Europe), who explored the topic in greater depth from a European and minority rights perspective. The session was chaired by Univ.-Prof. DDr. Jürgen Pirker from the Department of Global Governance at the Institute for Basic Research.
The event was very well received and attracted keen interest, particularly from the large number of students in attendance. It marked a further milestone in the mutually fruitful collaboration between the University of Graz and Tbilisi State University and underlines the importance of this growing partnership for international academic exchange.

The Centre for Eastern European Law and Eurasian Studies (CEELES) at the Faculty of Law recently (28 November 2024) hosted a distinguished panel discussion on “Legal Approximation and Minority Rights in Georgia.” The event began with warm welcome addresses by the Dean, Univ.-Prof. Dr Gabriele Schmölzer, and Assoc.-Prof. Dr Benedikt Harzl, Deputy Director of CEELES.
The highlight of the event was a series of insightful presentations by our invited experts, Prof. Irine Kurdadze and Prof. David Pataraia from Tbilisi State University (TSU), who provided a compelling overview of the diverse legal and societal challenges in this field. Their presentations were enriched by critical and analytical commentary from former Dean Univ.-Prof. Dr Joseph Marko and Assoc.-Prof. Dr Emma Lantschner (Centre for South-East European Studies), who broadened the discussion with perspectives on European and minority rights frameworks and, not least, by examining the comparative aspect. The panel was moderated by Univ.-Prof. DDr. Jürgen Pirker from the Department of Global Governance at the Institute of Foundations of Law.
The event attracted considerable attention and enthusiastic participation, particularly from the many students in attendance.
