Lecture by Prof. Mikhail Antonov: “Conservatism in Russian Law: In Defiance of Liberal Values?”

On November 24, Prof. Mikhail Antonov (Land Steiermark Fellow /Higher School of Economics St. Petersburg) held a lecture titled “Conservatism in Russian Law: In Defiance of Liberal Values?”. The lecture took place in an online format due to the current situation around Covid-19. In this event, which was moderated by Ass.-Prof. Dr. Benedikt Harzl and attended by a number of international legal scholars, Antonov explored the question of what role the idea of conservatism plays in today's legal thinking as well as in the interpretation and implementation of the law in Russia. In a subsequent discussion, that proved to be very stimulating, further aspects of this approach were considered against, i.e. the background of foreign policy as well as tensions between Russia and the ECtHR.
